Starfish make great models for practicing underwater photography. They are very photogenic, don’t swim very fast, come in all sorts of sizes and shapes, and range in colour from yellows and greens to orange and neon pink, plus they are not at all camera shy. And no, not all of them have five arms!
We have been lucky enough to spend some time underwater off the coast of Croatia where the water is clear, blue, and drops to temperatures below 16C beyond 20m. These pictures were taken using my Canon Powershot S120 in the Canon underwater housing, with only the built in flash and diffuser for lighting. The underwater setting restores some of the red colours filtered out by water, back into the shots, and I have to say, I am quite pleased with the results.
Summer isn’t over yet, and while there are even more exciting things ahead, it’s been pretty fabulous so far.
